Why Strays

Cat picture
Hi, my name is Diana, I have several cats of my own plus I'm a caretaker to a colony of feral and stray cats outside. Most of the cats that I do have inside my home were once feral. I have a few that have been strays. Most people don't know the difference between a feral and a stray cat.
A feral cat is defined as not having human contact, not being previously owned.

A stray cat is defined as having been previously owned but they have been abandoned or lost.

I feed and take care of approximately 40 to 45 cats. That's total inside my home and out. The love and compassion I have for each one of them is beyond describing. This feeling goes out to all of the feral and stray cats. The overwhelming population of feral and stray cats are due to irresponsible cat owners. The cycle is never ending. Please excuse me, if this starts to sound like I am a bit irritated but this really brothers me. Many of the reasons that cats become stray and feral are due to the irresponablilty of owners. I think once you have read the list below you will agree.

1. When an owner decides they want a kitten because they are so cute and cuddly but when they grow up , the owner decides they don't want the cat anymore. I have seen people throw their cat outdoors or take the cat elsewhere, to a park or somewhere else to be abandoned. I have also seen that same person turn around and go get another kitten in a few weeks.

2. When the owners cat becomes pregnant, they decide not to keep all of the kittens. They don't take the time to find loving, caring and responsible people that will give them a good home. They end up putting them out of the home and on the streets for you and I to take care of. Some owners just don't want to deal with the mother and the babies and throw them all out or dump them off somewhere.

3. Owners not taking the responsiblility to have their cats spayed or neutered. This is probably the main cause of the large stray cat population. Cats can have a litter of kittens about every 3 to 4 months. They multiply fairly quick if the owners do not take the responsiblility to have them spayed and neutered.

4. Owners letting their male cats out because they know they don't have to worry about them becoming pregnant. This just generates more population with the other stray cats that are running around and other owners that have not taken the responsiblilty to have theirs spayed and neutered. Remember, just because it's a male doesn't mean you don't have the same responsiblility to have it neutered.

5. Owners that want to have cats but can't afford them, they don't think about the cost of getting them spayed and neutered (Some cities have clinics and organization that can help with the cost, especially for older people
that are on fixed incomes, check in your communities for these programs). Owners also find out food cost can get expensive for their cats.

6. Owners that find out that they are allergic to their cat or that a family member is. They then throw the cat out to the street. There are other ways to handle this problem. There are shots for this allergy but most people would rather throw the cat out and they will not take the time to find it a good home. It's just a short time of suffering for them but could mean death for the cat in many ways.

7. The owners moving and can't take the cat with them so they leave it to fend for itself or drop it off somewhere. When in most cases the owner knew this a head ot time but did not take the time to find the cat a new home.

I could go on with this list of reasons why cats become stray or feral because people can come up with  lots of excuses to be irresponsible for their pets, just about every day I hear a new excuse.

So, please care about your pet. Get it spayed or neutered and if it does come to a point in your life that the cats can't stay with you any longer, find it a good home! After being kept inside they don't know how to find food and shelter. Many starve and get hit by cars or freeze to death, so think and be responsible.

"

Please!"
